Cyber Security
Could you suffer a cyber attack?
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month! Promoted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the National Cyber Security Alliance and others, the purpose is to help every American
be safe and secure online.
Our Insight shares guidance from the DHS' Stop. Think. Connect. campaign to help us better understand our cyber environment and its risks.
Cloud Services
What is "Cloud Computing"?
Cloud computing simply means using servers that are hosted on the internet to store, access and use your data instead of keeping it on a local network or your PC. If you use a web-based account like
Gmail, that's cloud computing.
In this article we share helpful tips found in a recent blog post by Alan Brill, a Senior Managing Director with Kroll's Cyber Security practice.
Forecast: Increasing Clouds
How much of your information is in "The Cloud"?
JPMorgan Chase Breach Alert!
On October 2, 2014, JPMorgan Chase (Chase) notified the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it had suffered a cyber attack that occurred in June, 2014, compromising 76 million households and
7 million small businesses. While Chase claims that no sensitive personal or financial information was involved, we want you to be aware of phishing attempts that could result from the breach
event.
If you are a customer of Chase and you receive an email message, phone call, text message or letter that appears to be from Chase, do not provide any information in response. Instead, call Chase on
your own and ask them if they contacted you for any reason.
As always, remain vigilant in regularly reviewing your financial accounts for any suspicious activity.

Apple Pay, Google Wallet
Do you know how they work?
Promising ease of use, security and privacy, mobile payment systems are here and becoming more widely usable. And, will likely become even more common in the very near future.
What do you need to know and understand about such phone-based systems prior to determining for yourself how easy and safe they will make your purchases?
Here, we look at how two popular systems work and what should be considered when using mobile payment systems.
The Smartphone
How safe is yours?
Did you know you can make phone calls with smartphones? That may be a silly question but with all the other things you can do with a smartphone, it might be easy to forget it can.
Because you can check bank balances, make purchases, store information and more, it is vital that you know how to use your phone in a way that will not increase your risk of identity theft.

7 Legal Tips for Settling Disputes
with Your Neighbors
LegalShield provider law firms frequently hear from members involved in a dispute with a neighbor. The first step toward resolving a dispute is to understand the laws where you live. If you need assistance resolving a dispute with a neighbor call your LegalShield provider law firm and speak with an attorney.
Try a Friendly Approach – You may avoid turning a disagreement with your neighbor into a prolonged legal battle by starting with a friendly conversation. Speak with your neighbor calmly about your
concerns and together you may come up with a resolution that works well for everyone. Remember, it is likely you will be living next to this person for a long time and starting with a civil
conversation may make things much easier.
Disturbances – We all expect to have some peace and quiet in our own home, particularly at night. Many localities have noise ordinances that dictate specific hours for quiet. These hours may be
extended on the weekends. If talking with your neighbor is unsuccessful, your LegalShield provider law firm may be able to draft a letter on your behalf informing the neighbor of the local noise
restrictions. If this too is unsuccessful, you should contact local law authorities to file a noise complaint.
Dangerous or Mistreated Animals – A dangerous animal can cause you to fear for your family’s safety. It may be heartbreaking to see an animal abused or mistreated. In some localities animal matters
may be handled by the police, while others may have a dedicated animal control department. Find out the rules where you live and if necessary file a report or formal complaint. If an animal has
injured you call your LegalShield provider law firm.
Property Line Disputes – Disputes over the exact location of a property line can become contentious and may require a great deal of expert research to resolve. This may include surveying the property
and locating old deeds or property records, some of which may be conflicting. If you are involved in a dispute over a property line, contact your LegalShield provider law firm.
Illegal Activity – Avoid confrontation with a neighbor you believe is involved in illegal activity. In such circumstances, you should contact local law enforcement. If you fear retribution from a
neighbor, you may file an anonymous report. Always confirm with law enforcement that your report will be anonymous.
Dangerous Trees – At best a half dead tree or large limb swaying dangerously close to your house may keep you up at night; at worst it could cause injury or property damage. Laws about fallen or
dangerous trees vary greatly in different localities. Contact your LegalShield provider law firm to learn more about the laws where you live.
Home Owners Association (HOA) – If you live in a neighborhood governed by an HOA, many common issues may already be addressed in the bylaws. HOA bylaws may contain rules about noise, building on your
property and pets. Some bylaws may even require mediation to resolve disputes between neighbors. If you need assistance reviewing your HOA bylaws contact your LegalShield provider law firm.

8 Legal Tips for Renting a Car
When renting a vehicle it is important that you fully understand the fees, insurance coverage and liability, as well as the terms and conditions. The following tips are designed to help save you time and money. If you need assistance or have questions call your LegalShield provider law firm.
Do your homework. Booking online may help you compare pricing, pickup locations and rental terms. Always review the rental company’s terms and conditions before making a reservation. Some
companies restrict overall mileage or prohibit use of the rental vehicle in certain states or provinces.
Beware of additional fees. Consider the cost of gas, how much the rental agency will charge for any damages, the cost of supplemental insurance and taxes. These costs can sometimes total more than
the actual rental. Determining the full cost early will help you avoid surprises.
If you already own a car, your existing auto insurance policy may cover your rental vehicle. Check with your insurance company before you purchase additional coverage through the rental company. If
your own vehicle is not covered by collision insurance consider purchasing the damage waiver. The damage waiver will protect you from paying for damage to the rental vehicle.
Paying with a credit card may offer additional protection. Some credit card companies offer additional coverage when used to rent a vehicle. Contact your credit card company to find out what they may
or may not cover.
Always thoroughly examine the vehicle for damage before leaving the rental agency. You should examine not just the exterior of the vehicle but also the inside for stains, rips, burns or any other
damage. Make sure damage is noted on the rental form and retain a copy for your own records.
Avoid additional fees by returning your rental to the agent on time. If you need additional time, call ahead. You may be able to negotiate an extended rental without a late fee.
Upon returning the vehicle, let the rental agency know if something did not work properly or if you had a negative rental experience. The agency representative may provide a discounted rate based on
your experience.
Save a copy of the rental agreement for your records. Read over your rental agreement to make sure you are aware of all charges or credits that may be involved. Monitor your bank account/credit card
statement to make sure the final charges match your agreement.
