Amazon is celebrating Women's History Month with its inspirational women across Operations.

Amazon is celebrating Women's History Month by highlighting women across Operations who embody our Leadership Principles, drive innovation, and create pathways for future generations of women.

Kimberly Pouncy, regional learning manager, and April Underwood, senior operations manager at SDF6, represent different yet equally inspiring journeys to leadership.

Kimberly leveraged 23 years of manufacturing experience when joining MDW2 in 2017, advancing from inbound dock area manager all the way up to her current role by making data-driven quality improvements that transformed site performance.

April began as a seasonal associate in 2011 after being a stay-at-home mom, progressively taking on greater responsibilities through the Zappos-to-Amazon transition and the challenges of the pandemic before stepping into Reverse Logistics (ReLo) in 2021—demonstrating that career growth at Amazon can come from many starting points.

Q: What was a pivotal moment in your Amazon career has shaped your leadership approach?

Kimberly: The COVID-19 pandemic was pivotal for me and the learning team. We had to reinvent onboarding processes while maintaining safety protocols—it was truly Day 1 all over again. It challenged my leadership skills and ability to pivot, allowing me to manage through adversities and learn more about myself as a leader.

April: In my 13-year career, the most important moment was moving into ReLo. My time in fulfillment honed my technical abilities and taught me planning and execution. Leading through COVID-19 taught me to quickly implement new procedures and be flexible. Leading the SDF6 team has given me a unique opportunity to develop my people leadership skills, balancing compassion and empathy with accountability.

Q: What achievement as a leader at Amazon are you most proud of?

Kimberly: I'm most proud of the OB quality improvement I made at MDW2 in 2020. When I began managing the quality team, I was able to deep dive the misses and identified defects coming from OB Dock. I added a step in their loading process involving an auditor scanning each Pit as a location, ensuring that each pallet was loaded into the correct trailer. The site's DPMO improved with this implementation.

April: My proudest achievements are seeing my direct team's growth. When I support and develop my leaders to become more efficient and confident in their roles, I truly feel I'm fulfilling my purpose. I've worked with countless leaders who have challenged me and taken time to develop me as a person and a leader. My greatest achievement is helping someone else realize and live up to their potential at Amazon.

What advice would you give to someone early in their Amazon career?

Kimberly: Identify your career path. Envision where you want to be in 10 years and work backwards. Talk to people in those positions to confirm it's what you truly want. Be open to gaining more experiences and building relationships along the way. As you grow, help others grow, too.

April: First, get to know the people who work for you. Earn Trust by being present. Learn how to motivate them and understand their goals. You cannot do this job alone—you absolutely have to lean on your teams, and if they don’t have trust in you, it is impossible for you to move in the same direction and deliver results. Second, Learn and Be Curious every day. Ask questions, seek answers, and take notes. My career spans a decade of learning from peers and subject matter experts. Never be afraid to say, "I don't know."

Tell us about a woman who has inspired you the most?

Kimberly: Dr. Patricia Bath discovered that blindness highly impacted underserved communities and invented the Laserphaco probe for cataract surgery. She brought ophthalmic surgical services to Harlem Hospital's Eye Clinic and persuaded Columbia University professors to operate on blind patients for free. This demonstrates her ability to recognize issues (Bias for Action), address them through research (Deep Dive), and discover sustainable solutions. Despite facing glass ceilings, she took her research abroad and achieved patents in laser eye surgery. She did not allow barriers to stop her from doing what she was passionate about. She pursued her dreams and found places that recognized her value.

April: I've had several women mentors throughout my career at Amazon. Whitney Wempe convinced me I could become an area manager. Jackie Healey at SDF4 taught me how to lead a team toward common goals. We even had an all-female led OB shift for a period of time and truly showed the site what it looked like to win. Kerry Guiher made a significant impact on me as she challenged me at 35-years-old to pursue a college degree, which I completed in two and a half years while raising three children and running a busy shift. However, one of my biggest inspirations is my teenage daughter. The experience as a mother serves as a constant reminder of the importance of driving positive change for the generations that will follow in our footsteps.

How have you helped create positive change for women at Amazon?

Kimberly: I mentor and lead by example, encouraging women that there's nothing they can't achieve. I was told I couldn't accomplish many things I've now done—graduating high school, earning a degree, getting married, and having a successful career. I’ve learned that it is our job to plant positive seeds into each other. I make it my business to help others, even if it means sharing my own barriers.

April: As an L5 area manager at SDF4, I led the first nodal Women@ group for female leaders across three Shepherdsville sites. I also led the site Women@ group, helping Tier 1 and Tier 3 associates with resumes and interview skills. As an L6 leader, I unified the larger TSSL network group before transitioning to ReLo. I'm currently the sponsor of all ELG groups at SDF6 and a member of the ReLo Women@ board, where I continue to mentor and develop women leaders across our network.

Through their different approaches, Kimberly and April demonstrate that there's no single path to leadership at Amazon. These women are helping create a more equitable future—not just during Women's History Month, but every day of the year.

NEWS 2 minutes to read Our Progress Towards an Even More Inclusive Amazon Published: Aug 30, 2024 In 2022, we announced our plan to conduct a racial equity audit – a third-party review of our policies, programs, and practices intended to identify any potentially disparate impacts on U.S. hourly employees. The audit is just one part of the significant short- and long-term investments we continue to make in an effort to foster a more inclusive and welcoming workplace for all Amazonians. The review was led by the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison (Paul, Weiss). The audit wrapped up and we received the final report this month, so we wanted to share an update on the process and the observations. The third-party review incorporates feedback collected during in-person listening sessions conducted across the United States, a survey of thousands of U.S. hourly Operations employees, a review of hundreds of documents relating to the Amazonian employee experience, and interviews with various site leaders, PXT employees, Amazon senior leaders, and subject matter experts. They then prepared a report, which you can find on About Amazon. The report highlights a number of areas where our existing policies, programs, and initiatives are actively contributing to a more inclusive and equitable Amazon. Examples include Affinity Groups fostering a sense of belonging and creating connections to our local communities, our comprehensive pay and benefits that are available on day one, robust onboarding and training programs, career advancement and training opportunities, and our commitment to Amazon’s escalation culture and the variety of feedback mechanisms available to Amazonians. Across Amazon, we remain committed to our vision to build inclusive and equitable experiences for our global base of employees, customers, and the communities we serve. Still, we recognize that this work is ongoing and that there’s more for us to do in this space and that we have opportunities to enhance Amazonians’ shared understanding of policies and practices. Looking for more? The full report is available on About Amazon.

Amazon has expanded and enhanced a variety of benefits and services to support you and your family on this journey. Here are a few ways your benefits can help manage expected and unexpected turns. 1. Guide for family planning, pregnancy, and bonding leave – Amazon is committed to making it easy for you to plan for leave if you or your partner are in the process of birthing, adopting, fostering, or coping with loss of a pregnancy. Use the guide for step-by-step instructions to prepare for your leave or return to work. 2. Mental health resources to support you in your journey – Mental health is a critical aspect of family-building. Amazon has many resources to help you and your partner navigate the new parenting rhythms of life, including in-the-moment counseling options in person or by video/chat, and a suite of self-guided tools and pregnancy-focused peer support forums. Visit A to Z’s mental health and well-being page to learn more. 3. Expanded reimbursement for adoption, surrogacy, and donor expenses – Amazon is expanding its reimbursement program beyond adoption to also include surrogacy and donor expenses. Each household may be reimbursed for up to $10,000 in eligible expenses such as agency fees, legal fees, and travel expenses. The adoption, surrogacy, and donor benefits are separate from each other, meaning you can use all three programs. Adoption and surrogacy reimbursement benefits are available to full-time, part-time, and reduced time employees working 20 hours or more (class F, H, and R) regardless of medical plan enrollment status. Donor tissue reimbursement benefits require you to be enrolled in an Amazon medical plan. You must have 90 days tenure at Amazon before you or a dependent can qualify for adoption/surrogacy/donor reimbursement. 4. New maternal warning signs training – Amazon teamed up with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to share important messages about maternal warning signs and empower you and your family to advocate for you or your partner’s health during and after pregnancy. 5. New pregnancy program with virtual doula – Amazon’s family-building benefit with Maven includes free unlimited access to virtual doulas throughout pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum. Doulas are trained professionals who can provide informational, emotional, and physical support before, during, and after childbirth to improve the pregnancy and delivery experience. During virtual appointments, doulas can help you create a birth plan, discuss birth positions and breathing techniques, educate patients so they can advocate for themselves during the birthing process, and more. There’s no requirement to have gone through fertility treatment to speak to a virtual doula, and the doula benefit is available to Amazon employees and spouses/partners enrolled in an Amazon medical plan starting Day 1 of employment. 6. Enhanced fertility and family-building care – Amazon’s family-building benefit with Maven continues to offer financial coverage for fertility treatment if you are enrolled in a health plan with Amazon. Like other health procedures, you’ll share the cost of care with Amazon at a significantly reduced cost. New in 2025, the benefit also includes free, unlimited access to expert virtual care, a dedicated Care Advocate, on-demand classes, and expert-approved resources to support you whether you want to grow your family through fertility treatment, adoption, or surrogacy. No infertility diagnosis is required to get started. After 90 days of tenure at Amazon, you or your dependent can access in-person fertility treatment. 7. Pregnancy care through medical insurance – If enrolled in a medical insurance plan through Amazon, your plan covers a variety of preventive care, education, supplies, and more to support you through pregnancy and well after baby is born. For more information on Maven and Amazon’s family-building benefits, visit A to Z.

NEWS 3 minutes to read Invented Here: DNK7's NASCAR-Inspired Process Saves Time and Money Published: Mar 03, 2025 At DNK7 in New Jersey, Continuous Improvement Manager Mark Chersevani, Process Improvement Specialist Victor Freitas, and a team of associates and managers had a bright idea to improve the stow bag replenishment process with their innovative "Pit Crew" method. Read on to learn about DNK7's approach to improving the stow bag reset process, while saving their site thousands of dollars in the process. An opportunity to improve bag replenishment DNK7, like other delivery stations, faced challenges with under processing of stow bags during pick and stage. This became a productivity issue that impacted the On the Road (OTR) teams that would come in the afternoons and would have to spend time replenishing stow bags that had not been done in the mornings, reducing time from their planned work for the day. Mark and Victor saw an opportunity to increase efficiency and reduce wasted time and motion. "We noticed that simple changes can make such a big impact," Mark shared. "You don't have to think of these grand ideas to save the company money.” Innovation in action Victor explained: "This idea was born out of the struggles that I saw as an OTR area manager, where my team would spend hours replenishing bags that UTR teams were unable to complete in the mornings.” The duo developed a new process they called the "Pit Crew method,” inspired by NASCAR’s pit stop efficiency. Instead of having one associate handle all aspects of bag replenishment, they created a three-person system: Line Loader: One associate prepares bags by placing five bags inside an open bag. Sort Zone Replenisher: A second associate acts as a sort zone replenisher, filling up the aisles with prepared bags. Virtual Opener: The third associate physically and virtually opens the bags with a Dolphin device. The Pit Crew bag replenish method better utilized associates' skills and boosted engagement, while also improving cost to serve by eliminating wasted motion and reducing overproduction – a prime example of how small changes can lead to a big impact in our operations. Yielding big savings for Amazon The results were impressive. The team saw improved metrics for the bag reset process by 70% upon rollout. "When the entitlement came in, we couldn't believe how much savings and time was saved," Mark recalled. Team effort and recognition This achievement wasn't just the work of two people. Victor and Mark emphasized the importance of the wider team at DNK7: "We worked with area managers and PAs who had to train and deploy this, and we also got feedback from associates on their frustration with the old process and the success of the new one.” The team's hard work paid off when they won an AMZL Kaizen award for their idea. "It was great to get recognized for this idea, and the trip to Nashville with the team to accept the award was an added bonus,” Mark said. Looking to the future While the exact process developed at DNK7 may not be implemented network-wide, it has inspired further innovations. Victor explained, "We're scaling and trialing a similar process now in some sites. While this Kaizen was not the final state for what the network will see, it was definitely the springboard for what's going to be coming later this year." Five Things I Learned at Climate Week

Chris Atkins, director of Worldwide Ops Sustainability, walks us through some of the highlights coming out of Climate Week NYC 2024.

  1. Things are happening fast. I was impressed and a little bit astonished at the momentum we’ve gained over the last 12 months. More and more people are stepping up to consider the ways their business and industry can take climate action. Wherever you work, I encourage you to really think about what waste and inefficiencies exist. Bring a climate action lens to every decision you make every day: you’ll find the right solutions for our planet.
  2. The Climate Pledge is driving action. It struck me that Amazon and the Climate Pledge are deeply involved in so many of the solutions that are necessary right now to take action against climate change. The power of the Pledge is its ability to bring signatories together.
  3. Electrification will be a critical component of our effort to decarbonize our on-road vehicles. I joined a discussion on what we need to put more electric vehicles on the road and I’m excited to see even more packages delivered by EVs globally as a result.
  4. Collaboration drives most impact. One long-term goal is to decarbonize our Operations, but we can’t just focus on what we can do in our existing operations. Amazon is working closely with steel production companies and supporting their research into new low-carbon steel. Long term we can use this steel in the sites of tomorrow, lowering the emissions of our future Operations.
  5. There’s cause to be hopeful. Fast forward 12 or 24 months, and I think the world will have made big strides forward in deploying the low carbon solutions that we need to scale up quickly and mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. I’m proud of where we’re going and I’m proud of the work that you all are doing. From reducing waste to renewable energy, the momentum of change is now with us.

Security Standards of Conduct: To protect the people, information, and assets of Amazon, Amazon people must conduct themselves in a manner that promotes a safe and secure work environment. This standard provides the global baseline requirements for classifying and reporting security infractions. Deviation from this standard will expose Amazon to risks impacting people, information, and/or assets.
Business Code of Conduct & Ethics: In performing their job duties, Amazon.com employees should always act lawfully, ethically, and in the best interests of Amazon.com. This Code of Business Conduct and Ethics (the "Code of Conduct") sets out basic guiding principles. Employees who are unsure whether their conduct or the conduct of their coworkers complies with the Code of Conduct should contact their manager or the Legal Department.

September 30 - October 17: Shift Swap requests must be made four days (96 hours) in advance (previously 24 hours) of the shift.
As a reminder, Shift Swap gives you an easy option to adjust your work schedule while preserving personal time, vacation time, and UPT. For support with Shift Swap, connect with your manager or site PXT.

NEWS 2 minutes to read Hurricane Milton: Ongoing Relief Efforts Underway Published: Oct 11, 2024 Our hearts are with our employees and partners affected by both Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. With thousands of Amazon employees in Milton’s path, making sure our employees are safe has been our top priority. We activated emergency protocols to ensure their well-being and ensure our sites remain safe. Additionally, Amazon has delivered more than 40 truckloads of essential items from our Disaster Relief Hub to relief partners working in the affected areas, and we will continue to dispatch Amazon-donated relief supplies through these next few weeks. We're here to support those impacted during this difficult time. If you or your family are facing new or ongoing challenges due to the hurricanes, we have resources available to support you. You can find them on the Disaster Relief Guide here on A to Z. Many Amazonians have asked how they can help. A virtual volunteer opportunity is available to take support calls from community members asking for help with property cleanup. Training resources are available for volunteers. Learn more here. In addition, Amazon has created a donation page for those who would like to help those in need financially. A tax-deductible donation will help deliver critical supplies, temporary shelter, medical care, and other emergency assistance through our humanitarian partners.

When Lina Hernandez moved to the United States from Colombia, she never imagined she would one day achieve the American dream of homeownership. Now she proudly stands as a homeowner and an Amazon robotics trainer at ACY5 in New Jersey.

Lina’s journey was anything but easy. She became a single mother at a very young age and faced the daunting challenge of navigating life in a new country where she spoke very little English. “I just needed a paycheck,” Lina said. “I had to reinvent myself.”

Lina's determination to succeed grew stronger as she settled into her Tier 1 role. She decided to make Amazon her career and continued to develop new skills through upskilling initiatives, including Career Choice and free training in robotics opportunities.

“One of the great parts of working for Amazon is that if you are inquisitive, and you show that you work hard, you will be recognized,” Lina said. “Someone is going to discover you."

Visit 'Explore Your Benefits' on A to Z to see your full suite of benefits. You can also learn more about Career Choice here.
